My name is Bas Voorter and I was born and raised in a region of the Netherlands that is called Limburg. Characteristic for this region is that there are a lot of wind-, fanfare- and drumbands. This region is famous for his “World Music Competition”, held every four years in the town of Kerkrade.
As my father and my sister were already playing in a windband in the village of Heythuysen it was obvious that I heard a lot of music at home. Infected by them I wanted to play an instrument too and from the beginning it was clear to me that it had to become percussion (although my mother wanted me to play the flute, whahaha).
I started my musical carreer at the school of music called “Kreato” with mr. Jo Zinzen, who was a great teacher. Later I also went with him to a school of music in ‘s Gravenvoeren, Belgium.
After I finished secondary school I started to study Law School at the University of Maastricht, but the percussionvirus still had me. So after two years I started to study percussion and timpani at the Conservatoire of Maastricht with respectively mr. Pieter Jansen, former percussionist of the Limburg Symfony Orchestra and mr. Werner Otten, timpanist of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra (who retired in 2011).
In that time I was member of the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands and I was selected to play with The European Union Youth Orchestra.
Already in my first year I started to play in the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and soon other orchestras followed.
After my graduation in 2001 I was teacher at the same school of music where I started my carreer, Kreato.
In september 2002 I was appointed as part-time (50%) percussionist with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and in september 2003 another part-time job was appointed to me, namely as part-time (also 50%) principal timpanist of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2013 the Limburg Symphony Orchestra merged with "Het Brabants Orkest". Together we are now called "Philharmonic South Netherlands". From september 2018 I stopped working with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and became a fulltime member of the Philharmonic South Netherlands as principal timpanist/percussionist
